Day 16: Statistics
Previous Topic  Next Topic

In the last lesson we asked you to view your data using various structured and statistical reports. If you have not done that, go back and do it now before continuing with this lesson.

This lesson will show you how to use the DATA DOCTOR to build your own custom reports. This enables you to generate reports that only display what you want to be displayed.

Now do the following.

    1. Open the survey you created on Day 14 of this tutorial 'Day 14'.

    1. Select TOOLS | QUICK EDITOR | “Day 14single item” from the PocketSurvey Toolbar to launch the data in the Data Doctor that you collected and duplicated in lesson 14.

    1. In the Data Doctor click the ANALYST button from the toolbar. This will launch the Data Doctor STATISTICAL ANALYST. The Data Analyst is used to create reports and statistics from your collected data. You can create and build numerous different types of reports, choosing to report on any question in your survey.

    1. There are a number of different options to choose from when displaying your data in order to shape your report how you want it. The REPORT SCRIPT menu to the left displays a list of all your designed reports. Create a new script by clicking NEW SCRIPT in the Report Script Menu.

    1. In the GRAPH SUMMARY you will notice two fields, X-axis and Y-axis. The X-axis details the data that you wish to display on the X or horizontal axis of your graph, spreadsheet or chart. By clicking in the X-AXIS FIELDS section you can specify the field that you want to display in your report. Select WINE TYPE from the drop down list. A pop up box headed FIELD will pop up. Select INSERT. This FIELD menu allows you to add and MODIFY as many fields as you want to the X-axis. Click the SAVE AS button in the bottom left corner of the DATA ANALYST and name your report script “Script 1”.

    1. The Y-AXIS details the data you wish to display on the Y or vertical axis of your graph, spreadsheet or chart. Again you can specify the field/s you wish to display in your report. Select GENDER from the drop down menu list and INSERT the field.

    1. The STATISTICS area located to the right of the Y-AXIS FIELDS section lets you choose how you want to display your data in the report. Click at the diamond in the statistics area and the STATISTICS TYPE box will pop up. This gives you the option of how data will be displayed in the report. Select COUNT from the list. The numerical display choice to the right allows you to specify how many numbers appear after the decimal point. The statistic display choice enables you to choose whether you want to display your data numerically or as bars. Make sure the numerical display choice is 0 and the statistical display choice is NUMERICAL. Click INSERT.

    1. There are 3 different ways you can view your report. You can use either display your data in MS Word, MS Excel or as XHTML (in a web page). Make sure XHTML is selected in the OUTPUT AS menu located in the bottom right corner of the Data Analyst.

    1. Above this is the GRAPH TYPE menu. Currently the TABLE is the only graph type supported by the Data Doctor. Check the GRAPH SUMMARY section in the middle of the Data Analyst. This area displays a summary of each report that will be displayed. It should give details of your X and Y-axis, and your STATISTICS.

    1. SAVE your report script and then click the SHOW REPORT button located directly above SAVE. This will convert your data into a report that will be displayed on a web page. Your report should document the amount of men and women that prefer red and white wine.

The next lesson will show you how to give MENU question answers a score that can later be summoned in calculations.

Final Tip

When looking at 2 or more fields using the X and Y-axis fields it is best to keep the STATISTICS display to just one option. This makes your report much more presentable and easier to read.
