Day 20: Using the Internet on the Desktop/Handheld
Previous Topic  Next Topic

In the last lesson we asked you to use variables in the question prompt, displaying question answers in later questions as you progress through the survey. If you have not done that, go back and do it now before continuing with this lesson.

This lesson will show you how to use the Internet to connect your desktop and handheld device.

Now do the following.

    1. Open the survey you created yesterday 'Day 19'. Create a copy of the survey under a different name. Name the survey 'Day 20'.

    1. This lesson will show you how to set up your desktop and handheld device so that data can be transferred between the two using the Internet (via a web server). Click on the INTERNET icon at the top left of PocketSurvey to display a drop down menu. Select SETTINGS.

    1. The INTERNET SETTINGS form allows you to set up settings for yourself on your desktop. In the ADMINISTRATOR box enter a username for yourself and a password for this in the PASSWORD box. Enter your server/ftp address in the SERVER box. The DEFAULT FOLDER box requires you to identify an area where the files are going to be sent. Leave this and the PORT NUMBER as the default setting. Click OK.

    1. Now click USERS from the INTERNET menu. Click the CREATE button and enter the name “User x”. Change the folder to “evaluation/userx” and click OK.

    1. Click INTERNET again but this time select SEND QUESTIONNAIRE from the list (remember in PocketSurvey the word questionnaire is synonymous with survey). This will prompt a window to pop up asking you which Internet users you want to send the questionnaire to. Select ‘User x’ from the list and then SEND TO the SELECTED USERS. The survey will now be sent to the folder ‘userx’ on a web server. If you have not set up your own web server we can offer a service.

    1. On your HANDHELD DEVICE toolbar click on the button with the image of 4 people (NET). Select SETTINGS to set up this handheld device. Now fill in your details here the same as you did for setting up your desktop (remember that each handheld should be saved to a different folder). Click the NET button again and click CONNECT. Now you can receive the data you sent from your desktop on your handheld device by clicking NET | RECEIVE. When you have completed a survey click NET | SEND to send all of the collected data back to the desktop. Click INTERNET | RECEIVE in PocketSurvey to retrieve this data.

    1. Once you have set up all of the handheld devices your team will be using you can use a (set up) desktop to send data to and receive it from one or more handheld devices via stored folders on a web server.

Final Tip

You can send any amount of data from your handheld device to your desktop via the Internet. Clicking NET | SEND will always send absolutely everything that has been collected on the handheld.
