Day 8: Using the Time Question
Previous Topic  Next Topic

In the last lesson we asked you to use a special question type called a VISIT LIST available with QUESTION ZERO. If you have not done that, go back and do it now before continuing with this lesson.

This lesson will show you how you can use the TIME question. This question type enables you to log various time and date statistics for each survey such as the time taken to complete a survey.

Note

The VISIT LIST is a special type of question that can LOOKUP lists held in CSV file format, also known as an EXCEL data files. The Professional Plus and Enterprise Editions of PocketSurvey let you utilise this powerful LOOKUP feature in ANY question in your survey.

Now do the following.

    1. Create a new survey and save it as “Day 8”. INSERT a MENU question with a prompt of “Do you like wine?” and two choices of “Yes” and “No”.

    1. INSERT a MENU question with a prompt of “Which fruit do you prefer?” and 3 choices of “Apple”, “Pear” and “Banana”.

    1. Insert another MENU question with the prompt “Which is your preferred color?” and 3 choices of “Red”, “Yellow” and “Blue”.

    1. Select QUESTION ZERO and make it a TEXT question in the QUESTION DEFINITION DIALOG. Change the QUESTION PROMPT to “Name” making sure the minimum and maximum text lengths are set between 0 and 50.

    1. Create a DIRECTED SECTION by clicking SECTION in the QUESTION DEFINITION DIALOG and clicking DIRECTED. This will force the questions in the SURVEY to be answered one by one, ordered as they appear in the PocketSurvey Designer. Type in a QUESTION PROMPT of “QUESTIONS”.

    1. Add all of the questions you have created so far into the QUESTIONS section using the CUT and PASTE method. Whilst holding the Ctrl key on your keyboard, click on each of your three questions so that they are all highlighted. Release the Ctrl key and click on EDIT | CUT on the toolbar. This will temporarily remove the QUESTIONS until another function is used to PASTE them in a different location. Enter the empty SECTION you created called QUESTIONS. Now click EDIT – PASTE on the toolbar. The questions that you previously CUT should now be in the QUESTIONS section. This method allows you to rearrange and edit your question placement within a survey at any time.

    1. Now you have a basic survey in which the user answers 3 simple MENU questions. To be able to record how long a user takes to complete these questions a STOPWATCH needs to be set. Create a TIME question by selecting the TIME tab in the QUESTION DEFINATION DIALOG. Click the STOPWATCH box in the TIME question, and type a QUESTION PROMPT of “Stopwatch Start”.

    1. Select NONE from the DATA DESTINATION FILE menu so the answer to this question will be discarded. The question is simply a trigger that informs the stopwatch when it should begin timing your survey. Make sure this question is located before the QUESTIONS section in your survey.

    1. Create another TIME question by again clicking the STOPWATCH box in the QUESTION DEFINITION DIALOG. Type a QUESTION PROMPT of “Elapsed Time” and set its DATA DESTINATION FILE to SINGLE ITEM so that this information will be saved in the SINGLE ITEM file once RECEIVED from the SIMULATOR. Again make sure this question is located after the QUESTIONS section in your survey.

    1. Run your survey on the SIMULATOR and click the QUIT button when all questions are complete. RECEIVE this data from the SIMULATOR and click TOOLS – QUICK EDITOR – “Day 8#single item” from the TOOLBAR. This will launch the PS DATA DOCTOR displaying your data on a structured single row. The column entitled “Elapsed Time” tells you how long it took for you to complete the survey, starting from you being presented with the first question, to answering the last.

    1. To log the start and end times of each completed survey, more questions must be created. Create a TIME question with the “Auto time” box selected in the QUESTION DEFINITION DIALOG. Type a QUESTION PROMPT of “Start Time” and set the DATA DESTINATION FILE to “Single item”. Make sure you INSERT this question before the QUESTIONS section. Now create another TIME question again with the “Auto time” box selected. Type a QUESTION PROMPT of “End Time” and set the DATA DESTINATION FILE to “Single item”. Make sure you INSERT this question after the QUESTIONS section.

    1. To log the DATE create a TIME question with the “Auto date” box selected. Type a QUESTION PROMPT of “Start Date” remembering to set the DATA DESTINATION FILE to “Single item”. INSERT this question before the QUESTIONS section. Create another TIME question again with the “Auto date” box ticked. Type a QUESTION PROMPT of “End Date” and set the DATA DESTINATION FILE to “Single item”. INSERT this question after the QUESTIONS section.

    1. Run your survey on the SIMULATOR by clicking RUN on the PocketSurvey Designer toolbar. After answering all the questions you should see the OK and QUIT buttons. If you require more than one set of results enter another SURVEY IDENTIFIER and answer the series of questions again. When you have finished and want to stop answering questions click the QUIT BUTTON on the SIMULATOR.

    1. RECEIVE the data from the HANDHELD SIMULATOR and view your data in a structured format using the DATA DOCTOR by selecting TOOLS | QUICK EDITOR from the toolbar. Choose the first file from the list which should read “Day8#Single item”. You should now be able to see all the data collected from your survey. Each row of results in the DATA DOCTOR represents a different survey identifier.

The next lesson you will learn about the GPS, SKETCH and BARCODE functions in PocketSurvey.
